A 7-day hike on the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the "Mountains of the Moon," offers a stunning adventure through lush landscapes, alpine zones, and glacier peaks in Uganda. Here's an overview of a typical 7-day itinerary

Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,615m) to Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m)
Hike Duration: 5-7 hours
Highlights: Begin your trek from Nyakalengija trailhead. Pass through dense tropical rainforest teeming with wildlife like colobus monkeys, three-horned chameleons, and colorful bird species.
Accommodation: Nyabitaba Hut
Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut (3,505m)
Hike Duration: 6-8 hours
Highlights: Cross the Mubuku River and climb through bamboo forests and moorlands. The trail gets steeper and offers views of giant lobelias and heathers.
Accommodation: John Matte Hut
Day 3: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962m)
Hike Duration: 5-7 hours
Highlights: Traverse through the Bigo Bog, an alpine wetland with wooden planks aiding your journey. Arrive at the Bujuku Valley, surrounded by stunning mountain views.
Accommodation: Bujuku Hut
Day 4: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut (4,541m)
Hike Duration: 4-6 hours
Highlights: Ascend through a rocky terrain with breathtaking views of Mt. Stanley and the glacier peaks. This day prepares you for a summit attempt.
Accommodation: Elena Hut
Day 5: Elena Hut to Margherita Peak (5,109m), then to Kitandara Hut (4,023m)
Hike Duration: 8-12 hours
Highlights: Start early to summit Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda. This involves a mix of glacier climbing and steep ascents. Descend to Kitandara Hut through rugged terrain.
Accommodation: Kitandara Hut
Day 6: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m)
Hike Duration: 6-8 hours
Highlights: Descend through alpine meadows, steep ridges, and scenic views of waterfalls and lush valleys.
Accommodation: Guy Yeoman Hut
Day 7: Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyakalengija Trailhead
Hike Duration: 6-7 hours
Highlights: Continue descending through the bamboo zone and montane forest, with a chance to reflect on your journey. Complete the trek at the Nyakalengija trailhead.
Accommodation: Return to nearby lodges or transfer to your next destination.

Since the Rwenzori trek involves various ecosystems and altitudes, proper gear is crucial:
Clothing:
Base layers (moisture-wicking).
Insulated jacket (down or synthetic).
Waterproof jacket and pants.
Warm gloves, hat, and thermal socks.
Footwear:
Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support.
Gaiters to keep mud and water out.
Backpack:
Daypack (~30-40 liters) for essentials.
Waterproof cover.
Sleeping Gear:
Warm sleeping bag (rated for -10°C).
Miscellaneous:
Trekking poles.
Headlamp with spare batteries.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm (high UV exposure).
Refillable water bottles or a hydration system.
